How To Avoid a Slip and Fall Accident This Winter

Between icy sidewalks and slick floors, winter is a particularly dangerous time for slip and fall accidents. With the cold weather often comes rain and snow, which can make sidewalks, roads, driveways, stairways, and even indoor areas extremely hazardous. If you wish to avoid a slip and fall accident this season, consider following these simple suggestions.

1. Look Out for Black Ice: When roads freeze, it can sometimes be difficult to see the icy surface. Be on the lookout for black ice anytime you are driving, crossing the street, or stepping out of your car. When the temperature is below freezing outside, you should be especially cautious.

2. Always Use Rails When Possible: If you are using stairs, either outside or inside, always use handrails as an extra precaution in case you should slip. Outdoors, paved stairs can be slippery and very dangerous when wet or frozen. Even indoors the floors can become equally dangerous, so grab the railing whenever you can, just to be safe.

3. Wipe Your Feet When Coming Indoors: Tracking in snow or rain can be very dangerous, especially on smooth floors made of hardwood, stone, or tile. If you are coming inside from the cold weather, always be sure to stomp off the snow, wipe away most of the moisture, and proceed walking on any slick floors with caution.

4. Wear Safe Footwear: When the winter weather kicks in, make sure you are prepared with the appropriate footwear. Wearing supportive shoes or boots with good traction can go a long way towards helping prevent slips and falls.

In addition to protecting yourself from slips and falls, make sure you do your part to ensure nobody is harmed on your property as well. If you own a home or business, be sure to shovel the driveway or walkway quickly after any new snowfall. You should also salt your walkway and any outdoor stairs generously to prevent any accidents.
