History of Levittown

Halfway between Farmingdale and Hempstead, Levittown is located in Nassau County as a census-designated place (CDP). Founded by William Levitt of the housing development firm, Levitt & Sons, Inc.. He was a former Lieutenant who recognized the need for cheap housing as soldiers were returning home from World War II. He saw the chance to take farmland property that his father had lying around and turn into an area with plain, mass-produced homes for war veterans.

Together with his family, they put together a planned community that was built from 1947-1951. It was the very first mass-produced suburban community, and is still considered the model for postwar suburbs throughout the nation. Today, many of those homes have been remodeled and updated to remain up-to-date with current styles; however, the history still lives on.
