Nassau County Pedestrian Accidents: A High Rate of Serious Injury

|

A report by the Commissioner of Health in Nassau County exposes the high rate of pedestrian accidents in the County. There was an average of 928 injuries and 30 deaths in a 9 year period. This extremely high rate of pedestrian accidents is of serious concern to city leaders. There was an increase in such accidents during the winter months when roads are more treacherous due to rain and ice, but during the spring and summer months, it was reported that a higher number of children were injured. The majority of these accidents occurred during the day, but a higher number of fatal pedestrian accidents took place during the evening hours.

Nassau County has had one of the highest rates of pedestrian accidents in New York State. This is more than just a public health and safety concern. When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, the injuries are often very serious or fatal. There is a high possibility of the pedestrian suffering from both the initial impact and a subsequent impact from the vehicle running over them, or another vehicle. Nassau County has a high number of elderly residents, who often are at greater risk of injury due to difficulty in walking, depth perception or balance. Vehicle operators may be speeding or DWI, or rushing through intersections without considering the danger to those who are on foot. Due to less density in Nassau County than in NYC, drivers can move at faster rates, posing a serious danger to those who are on foot.

If you or a loved one has been injured while walking, the injuries are usually extensive, and in the most tragic cases, fatal. There is often the need to have extensive medical treatment, and a pedestrian accident can result in catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, loss of limb, severe internal damage or other life-threatening or permanent injuries. If you or a family member has been the victim of a negligent driver, ensure your right to fair compensation is protected with the help of a highly skilled Nassau County personal injury attorney. The costs incurred could range into the hundreds of thousands of dollars in the first year alone. The non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering or loss of quality of life must be sought by a legal professional as well.
